But that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth for Bezos, who likes to get eight hours of sleep each night.<\/p>\n<p>He ran his logic for Rubenstein: If he cut his sleep from eight hours to four, he might get back enough waking time to make 133 decisions a day instead of 100. Bezos wasn\u2019t sold.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIs that really worth it if the quality of those decisions might be lower because you\u2019re tired or grouchy or any number of things?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rest, according to Bezos, is the input that makes the output better.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think better, I have more energy, my mood is better, all these things,\u201d he said. \u201cI prioritize [sleep], unless I\u2019m traveling in different time zones. They might also be the most intentional<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Amazon was a hundred people it was a different story,\u201d he said. \u201cBut Amazon\u2019s not a startup company. And all of our senior executives operate the same way I do. They work in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Mornings are for \u2018puttering\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>And when Bezos wakes up, he doesn\u2019t go straight into massive decision-making or anything having to do with work. He starts his days slow on purpose.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI like to putter in the morning,\u201d he said. That includes reading the newspaper, drinking coffee, and having breakfast with his kids before school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His first meeting isn\u2019t until 10 a.m., and he saves anything mentally demanding, what he called his \u201chigh-I.Q. meetings,\u201d for before lunch. After that, the window closes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy 5 p.m., I\u2019m like I can\u2019t think about that today, let\u2019s try this again tomorrow at 10 a.m.,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>A different bet from the always-on crowd<\/h2>\n<p>Bezos\u2019 daily routine looks pretty different from some of his largest competitors or other high-level executives.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Elon Musk has said he works well beyond a standard week and sleeps about six hours a night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried sleeping less, but then total productivity decreases,\u201d the Tesla and SpaceX CEO told Joe Rogan in a 2021 interview.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Other leaders narrow their choices in different ways. Mark Zuckerberg and Barack Obama, for example, both became known for paring down everyday decisions\u2014famously, their wardrobes\u2014to conserve mental energy for the calls that matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,\u201d Obama said in a 2012 interview with <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m trying to pare down decisions. I don\u2019t want to make decisions about what I\u2019m eating or wearing.
