It includes such touches as bronze finishings and other ornamental details, like a bas relief of the city\u2019s famous skyline and a large, classic station clock, also made of bronze.<\/p>\n<p>An interior wall near a entryway bears the seal of President Donald Trump, who had\u00a0Amtrak assume control\u00a0of the project last year after decades of\u00a0bureaucratic red tape and political infighting\u00a0among transit agencies and the competing interests of other powerful players, including James Dolan, the billionaire owner of MSG, the Knicks and the Rangers, who has staunchly opposed moving the arena.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump has mentioned renaming his hometown station in his honor as he\u2019s sought to burnish his legacy through public works projects, from a\u00a0massive new ballroom\u00a0at the White House to\u00a0a triumphal arch\u00a0leading into the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>For now, though, the name etched in capital letters across the proposed grand facade would still read, \u201cPennsylvania Station,\u201d renderings released Monday show.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not focused on names at all,\u201d said Andy Byford, who Amtrak named as a special adviser to oversee the redevelopment, when asked about a potential name change.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis building has a name, and the name is there,\u201d added Peter Cipriano, one of the lead developers.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Proposal aims to make Penn Station an icon again<\/h4>\n<p>The proposed design draws from the ornate, Beaux-Arts design of Grand Central Terminal, the city\u2019s other major rail hub, as well as Art Deco landmarks like the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, according to Vishaan Chakrabarti, one of the leaders of the team awarded the project.<\/p>\n<p>Designers also looked to the monumental, federalist style of government buildings in Washington, D.C., and those built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=1058\">Marguerite Casey Foundation to donate half a billion by 2036 to help rescue \u201csuffering\u201d nonprofits under Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The vision, he said, is to restore Penn Station\u2019s place among the pantheon of the city\u2019s greatest landmarks and bring a \u201csense of public ambition\u201d back to one of the nation\u2019s vital civic spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was this fearless embrace of ornament and decoration that in some ways we\u2019ve lost,\u201d Chakrabarti said. \u201cWe want to bring some of that sense of craftsmanship back.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The redesign is projected to cost around $7 billion to $8 billion, and construction is targeted to begin before the end of 2027, officials said Monday. Penn Station would remain in operation throughout as the project progresses in phases over about six years.<\/p>\n<p>More than 600,000 commuters traverse through the rail hub on any given work day, or more than the three major international airports that serve greater New York City \u2014 John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty \u2014 combined.<\/p>\n<h4>Knicks and Rangers home arena would remain at site<\/h4>\n<p>Plans floated over the decades have called for relocating MSG, but under the plans revealed Monday, the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Famous Arena\u201d would remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>A theater owned by MSG and built directly above the tracks, however, would have to be razed to make way for the new facade and concourse.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The developers and MSG owner James Dolan have reached a \u201cmemorandum of agreement\u201d for this critical part, which helped the rail carrier in picking the proposal over three other bidders, according to Byford. Final terms of the deal, including payment, haven\u2019t been determined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll understand why we wouldn\u2019t want to negotiate that in public,\u201d said Byford.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The next phase of the project will include refining the preliminary designs and going through the extensive federal environmental review process, which will help in generating a more detailed breakdown of costs, according to Byford.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed there are no plans for the government to take surrounding properties to expand the station, as some concerned locals have suggested.
