Tipped to be the world\u2019s largest IPO with a projected valuation of\u00a0$1.77 trillion\u2014SpaceX\u2019s IPO is due to take place\u00a0on\u00a0Wednesday and\u00a0is\u00a0expected to raise\u00a0roughly\u00a0$75 billion.\u00a0Gulf sovereign wealth funds and prominent investors\u00a0are\u00a0set to be among the biggest\u00a0beneficiaries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The multi-billion-dollar windfalls they are poised to receive will offer a\u00a0nicely-timed\u00a0boost to their balance sheets, which have not enjoyed the usual flow of petrodollars since the outbreak of the Iran war.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zooming out, it marks a significant moment in\u00a0validating their investment strategies, with the Gulf states\u00a0ranking among some of the earliest investors in\u00a0Elon Musk\u2019s\u00a0SpaceX and\u00a0xAI\u2014the two companies merged in early February to become a rocket\u00a0business, satellite internet provider and AI company.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

If SpaceX debuts successfully at its expected valuation, it would be one of the clearest examples of Gulf capital\u00a0backing\u00a0a transformational technology platform before public markets fully recognized its value.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia\u2019s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal\u2014aka the \u201cWarren Buffett of Arabia\u201d\u2014owns a\u00a00.63% stake\u00a0in SpaceX that could be worth around\u00a0$10.6 billion\u00a0if the IPO achieves its expected\u00a0$1.77 trillion\u00a0valuation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a cluster of high-profile Gulf sovereign wealth funds have exposure to SpaceX through both direct and indirect investments.<\/p>\n

While their stakes fall below reporting thresholds, the IPO should crystallize enormous paper gains for all of them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, for Gulf investors, the listing is not just about financial returns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In its\u00a0IPO filing,\u00a0SpaceX outlines\u00a0plans\u00a0to use some of the\u00a0capital\u00a0raised\u00a0to launch a constellation of up to one million\u00a0data center\u00a0satellites into orbit,\u00a0far away from the resource and regulatory constraints on Earth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company claims that solar panels and laser optical communication in space can produce energy eight times more efficiently than ground-based systems\u2014generating a total of 100 GW of power, equivalent to\u00a0roughly 100\u00a0nuclear power plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the prospectus acknowledges the technology is in its infancy, the plans align with the Gulf\u2019s broader strategic ambitions of building out their digital and communications infrastructure. <\/p>\n

These ambitions have been heightened by the ongoing blockade of\u00a0the Strait of Hormuz, which has revealed that subsea cables are just as vulnerable to geopolitical conflict as oil tankers.\u00a0The\u00a0Strait funnels both energy and data\u00a0through a single, vulnerable maritime corridor,\u00a0as explained in\u00a0this piece by Stimson, the research center.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in early March, the Gulf\u2019s cloud infrastructure was compromised when two Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers\u00a0in the UAE and one in Bahrain sustained direct hits from Iranian drones or damage from nearby debris. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Starlink already serves as an invaluable backup network for critical industries during disruptions and regional cloud outages. Given\u00a0Musk\u2019s\u00a0continued efforts to\u00a0build out\u00a0a resilient communications infrastructure, for the Gulf, backing SpaceX\u2019s satellite network is as much a strategic maneuver as it is a commercial tech investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

IMF cuts Saudi GDP growth forecast<\/h3>\n

Saudi Arabia\u2019s economy is expected to grow \u201cat about 2%\u201d in\u00a0\u20602026, a sizeable downward revision from the International Monetary Fund\u2019s\u00a0previous\u00a0forecast of 3.1%\u00a0<\/span>published in April<\/span>, as the kingdom\u2019s economic diversification efforts come under strain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia’s economy has \u200cproved resilient during the Iran war, but the conflict has weighed on non-oil activity and confidence, leaving growth this year “notably” lower, the Fund said\u00a0in\u00a0its\u00a0<\/span>latest update<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The findings follow an IMF staff visit to Riyadh between April 28 and May 13.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strong economic fundamentals\u2014including low government debt and ample reserves\u2014provided important buffers. Elevated oil prices also made up for reduced export volumes and should provide some relief for the current account and fiscal balances this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the Fund noted that a prolonged or intensified conflict could\u00a0negatively\u00a0affect\u00a0medium-term growth and investment prospects.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The main risk is an escalation of the conflict, which could further impair shipping routes,\u00a0<\/span>\u2060<\/span>damage energy infrastructure with associated output losses, and heighten uncertainty and financial sector risks,” it said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More positively, the IMF team welcomed the Public Investment Fund\u2019s\u00a0(PIF)\u00a0<\/span>revised 2026-2030 strategy<\/span>,\u00a0highlighting its focus on \u201cmaximizing financial returns, strengthening investment efficiency and increasing private sector participation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

UAE talks up and steps up U.S. investments<\/h3>\n

Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman of the UAE’s Executive Affairs Authority, visited Washington last week to meet\u00a0<\/span>senior White House officials.<\/span>The UAE is keen to inject fresh momentum into its decade-long, $1.4 trillion commitment to investing in the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Al Mubarak, who also serves as Mubadala’s managing director\u00a0(Mubadala is\u00a0Abu Dhabi\u2019s sovereign wealth fund with assets of\u00a0$385\u00a0billion)\u00a0talked up his country\u2019s investments so far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are exceeding commitments we made to the U.S. one year ago,\u201d he said, referencing the UAE\u2019s pledge last March to invest $1.4 trillion across a range of sectors, including AI infrastructure, semiconductors, energy, and American manufacturing. <\/span><\/p>\n

In January,\u00a0Emirates Global\u00a0Aluminium\u00a0entered into a joint development agreement with Illinois-based Century\u00a0Aluminium\u00a0to build a\u00a0<\/span>$4 billion\u00a0primary\u00a0aluminium smelter<\/span> in Inola, Oklahoma. Slated to be the first built in the U.S. since 1980, the massive facility will produce 750,000 metric tons per year, more than doubling current U.S. output. <\/span><\/p>\n

Al Mubarak\u2019s visit was also aimed at advancing the UAE-US AI Acceleration Partnership, designed to advance global artificial intelligence infrastructure and ensure supply chain security. <\/span><\/p>\n

The visit came just weeks after the UAE received its first shipment of Nvidia chips, which are being used to construct its 5GW UAE-US Stargate AI campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Middle East family offices look to reallocate capital<\/h3>\n

Middle Eastern family offices are leading a global rethink of investment strategies, with 82% planning to adjust their asset allocations in the coming year, as geopolitical and economic uncertainty drives a renewed focus on wealth preservation.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to UBS\u2019 Global Family\u00a0Office 2026\u00a0report\u00a0<\/span>which you can read here<\/span>\u00a0their current portfolios\u00a0remain\u00a0anchored in North America, which accounts for around half of allocations, while also\u00a0maintaining\u00a0exposure to Western Europe and the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, family offices in the region are increasingly showing a strong interest in technology adoption as well as sectors that advance regional development priorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI ranks as the top investment theme (50%), followed by AI-enabled healthcare (35%) and infrastructure (30%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis reflects a high-conviction and proactive approach to navigating global uncertainty and positioning portfolios for long-term opportunities,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Niels Zilkens, Head of Wealth Management Middle East at UBS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In total, UBS surveyed 307 family offices globally with an average net worth of\u00a0$2.7\u00a0billion, with all of them showing an increased focus on prioritizing resilience,\u00a0diversification\u00a0and long-term thematic opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, family offices in the U.S. exhibited the strongest home bias globally, with 88% of portfolios allocated to North America. While AI remains the top investment theme (65%), those surveyed also showed heightened interest in defense and security infrastructure (39%) and broader infrastructure investments (35%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The value of a 10-year dollar bond issued by Bahrain on 4 June\u2014the first public Gulf Cooperation Council sovereign debt issuance during the Iran war. Orders peaked at $3.2 billion as investors sought out the high-yield debt. Bahraini bonds came under pressure after the outbreak of the war in February, but recovered by mid-April after the UAE provided financial support. The latest notes are likely to be rated \u201cB\u201d by S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings, Bloomberg reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n
