Human-made PFAS are commonly referred to as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d because they don\u2019t break down naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=220\">Costco CEO says AI is not stealing workers\u2019 jobs\u2014it\u2019s \u2018elevating\u2019 them<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Australia filed the suit in the Federal Court of Australia against Minnesota-based\u00a03M Company\u00a0and its subsidiary 3M Australia.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>3M said it would fight Australia\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c3M has never manufactured PFAS in Australia and ceased sales of the products at issue in Australia around two decades ago,\u201d 3M said in a statement. \u201cDespite this, the (Australian) Department of Defense continued to use PFAS-containing firefighting foams for nearly two decades longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PFAS has been used since the 1950s in household and industrial products that resist heat, stains, grease and water. The firefighting foam containing PFAS was effective against fuel fires.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Defense Department warned residents near its Richmond Air Base outside Sydney in 2018 to reduce their consumption of locally produced fish and eggs, after PFAS was found in nearby groundwater.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=218\">Texas Stock Exchange CEO: exchanges can build on Exxon\u2019s retail model to rein in proxy advisors<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Attorney-General\u00a0Michelle Rowland\u00a0on Thursday accused 3M of withholding information about environmental risks the foam posed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commonwealth (of Australia) is seeking more than AU$2 billion ($1.4 billion) in damages to recover significant past and future expenses incurred in investigating and managing contamination resulting from the historic storage and use of this foam,\u201d Rowland told reporters.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Assistant Defense Minister Peter Khalil said his department had already spent AU$1.3 billion ($920 million) on managing and mitigating environmental impacts of the foam.
