Storonsky is the founder of Revolut, a trading and banking business that\u00a0has\u00a0already reached that holy grail of\u00a0consumer penetration\u2014verbification.\u00a0In Ireland, to \u201crevolut\u201d simply means to\u00a0transfer money,\u00a0pay for something or split a bill\u00a0on the\u00a0bank\u2019s\u00a0app.\u00a0To\u00a0\u201cGoogle\u201d\u00a0was recognized as a verb in America in 2002, four years after\u00a0Larry Page and Sergei Brin\u00a0officially incorporated\u00a0the search company.\u00a0To\u00a0revolut\u00a0became a verb in\u00a02022, a matter of months after\u00a0Storonsky\u2019s\u00a0company received its full banking\u00a0license\u00a0in Ireland. More than 80% of the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0adult population uses the service.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Revolut is not short on ambition.\u00a0It has applied for a U.S. banking license, a market ripe for the type of disruption\u00a0that has swept through Ireland. Earlier this year, it was granted full banking status by\u00a0the U.K.\u00a0regulators, meaning\u00a0Revolut\u00a0can now more easily\u00a0provide\u00a0the\u00a0complete\u00a0range of current\u00a0account,\u00a0mortgage\u00a0and deposit services\u00a0that customers demand.\u00a0It is operational in 40 countries\u00a0and in March announced record profits of $2.3bn for 2025, a 57% increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Could\u00a0Revolut\u00a0become a verb in the U.K., one of the most valuable banking markets in the world\u00a0and a country\u00a0Storonsky\u00a0has\u00a0prioritized?\u00a0\u201cIf we make this happen here, fantastic,\u201d Francesca Carlesi, the U.K. CEO of Revolut, tells me.\u00a0\u201cThe U.K. is a different market, more competitive\u2014we\u00a0actually like\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0competitive\u2014so I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think we can replicate\u00a0exactly the same\u00a0factors\u00a0[as Ireland]. But clearly for\u00a0me\u00a0the main lesson\u00a0is\u00a0that\u00a0the [Revolut]\u00a0watermark matters a lot.\u00a0When people start being promoters of Revolut,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0exciting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cExcited people\u201d include Jamie Dimon, the\u00a0CEO of\u00a0JPMorgan Chase, who warned\u00a0against\u00a0missing the significance of\u00a0fresh thinking.\u00a0\u201cBeing a company of sizable magnitude makes it easier to ignore new competitors since they often start small in one product but move rapidly to expand,\u201d he wrote in his April shareholder letter. He went on to name Revolut as\u00a0one of the \u201cmost successful examples\u201d\u00a0of a disruptor.\u00a0Analysts from Dimon\u2019s bank said that Revolut\u2019s\u00a075 million customers worldwide\u00a0were \u201cmore than the combined scale of Monzo, Starling, N26,\u00a0Bunq\u00a0and Wise and [are] approaching that of\u00a0JPMorgan\u00a0Chase\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Investors have\u00a0noticed. Revolut\u2019s latest fund raise\u00a0valued the firm at $75bn\u00a0and Storonsky has spoken of a future IPO which could value the business\u2014if someone\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0buy it before then \u2013\u00a0at north of $200bn.\u00a0Nvidia\u00a0and SoftBank are\u00a0major backers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNik\u2019s vision originally said [Revolut would be] the single, global, financial super-app,\u201d Carlesi\u00a0said. \u201cFundamentally, the idea is that you need to have a single place, a single touch point where you go\u00a0to\u00a0and you see everything in terms of your financials.\u00a0Actually, it\u2019s\u00a0not just financial, we say it is banking and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are\u00a0probably the\u00a0only\u00a0bank at this point that has under the same app, the same roof, everyday banking, lending in the future, savings, trading, wealth management,\u00a0crypto\u00a0and everything you need to manage your lifestyle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat that means is not just being that one card that people have in their\u00a0wallet, but\u00a0being the card and a deep bank [that is] top of mind when you need to pay something, you need to buy something online or do trading.\u00a0The shift that\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0doing is like growing up and repositioning the rebel as the go-to financial service partner.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Banks are necessarily conservative.\u00a0No one wants fast and loose operators around the important matter of money.\u00a0But too often that has become shorthand for\u00a0a\u00a0stodgy and unresponsive\u00a0sector that\u00a0fails to\u00a0respond\u00a0to customer demand. The fact that many banks only allow transaction settlements\u00a0between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, should raise eyebrows in a globally connected,\u00a024-hour\u00a0world.\u00a0Opening an account is still a painfully slow process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Nik did was take a really big hairy problem, which people thought wasn\u2019t solvable,\u00a0and then start with a wedge, which in their case was cards when people are traveling,\u201d said James Gibson, Revolut general manager and head of\u00a0its business bank.\u00a0\u201cSo, take it back to first principles and\u00a0solve for that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look back at the 1990s and 2000s,\u00a0there was\u00a0very little\u00a0to no innovation in terms of banking for businesses or for retail customers. Even now, you look around Europe at the kind of banking apps and websites that are offered to business customers and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really quite\u00a0shocking how\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0still not come that far.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Storonsky was asked if he might be obliged to cut his hair to persuade U.S. regulators that he was a serious banker.\u00a0\u201cI think I definitely need to wear a suit,\u201d he replied.\u00a0The founder\u2014who could be worth\u00a0as much as $80bn if the IPO goes to plan\u2014will hope that Revolut\u2019s record of rapid expansion will do the rest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
