The Minions movie, which has the devious henchlings seeking movie glory in Hollywood\u2019s Golden Age, opened on Wednesday and earned an estimated $61.4 million in its first five days, according to studio estimates. The Minions are a popular franchise globally and \u201cMinions & Monsters\u201d has earned $160 million worldwide in its debut week.<\/p>\n

Audiences looking for patriotic fare amid the\u00a0United States\u2019 250th birthday celebration\u00a0had \u201cYoung Washington\u201d to consider; it opened in third place with nearly $21 million. The movie focuses on George Washington\u2019s service during the French and Indian War.<\/p>\n

That left \u201cSupergirl\u201d in fourth with just under $10 million at the box office, a steep 74% drop from\u00a0its disappointing opening weekend.<\/p>\n

The weekend box office was down year-over-year about 24%, according to figures compiled by Rentrak, though this summer is up from 2025 by nearly 12%. That\u2019s due in part thanks to the low-budget Gen-Z sensations\u00a0\u201cObsession\u201d and \u201cBackrooms,\u201d\u00a0which took the sixth and seventh spots, behind\u00a0Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cDisclosure Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
