The new model, called Inkling, is designed to be versatile and efficient, processing queries across different media while balancing \u201ccost against performance,\u201d the company said on Wednesday.\u00a0Inkling is also open-weight, meaning developers can download and customize the model without seeing the training data or source code.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thinking Machines said Inkling performs well on various benchmarks compared to similar open-weight offerings. The company said Inklingwas trained \u201cfor strong performance across the board,\u201d\u00a0but that \u201cit is not the strongest model available today, closed or open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded last\u00a0February\u00a0by Murati and a cohort of other former OpenAI employees, Thinking Machines\u00a0is part of a group of so-called AI neolabs attempting to build more advanced artificial intelligence software that can compete with leading labs like OpenAI and Anthropic PBC. Some of these companies, including Thinking Machines, have nabbed substantial sums from investors before releasing any products.<\/p>\n

Murati\u2019s startup raised $2 billion at a $12 billion valuation last year, and was\u00a0said\u00a0to have been in discussions about a bigger, subsequent round.\u00a0Several employees have since\u00a0left her company,\u00a0joining firms like Meta Platforms Inc.\u00a0and OpenAI.<\/p>\n

With its new model, Thinking Machines could be filling a void in the US market, which is thought to be\u00a0lagging behind Chinese developers in putting out competitive open\u00a0AI products. Meta, once a leader in open model development, has\u00a0started to focus more\u00a0on closed or proprietary models that customers would pay to use. OpenAI, meanwhile,\u00a0released a pair of open models\u00a0last year but its product portfolio remains dominated by paid offerings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As businesses and individuals become\u00a0more conscious of their surging AI spending, some are turning to freely available models from China for certain tasks, raising national concerns in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thinking Machines is not aiming to monetize the new model. Currently, the startup generates revenue through its developer tool called Tinker for fine-tuning \u2014 or customizing \u2014\u00a0 AI models, which it sells to customers\u00a0such as hedge fund Bridgewater Associates\u00a0to improve\u00a0AI performance on financial tasks.<\/p>\n

Inkling is also part of Murati\u2019s bid to build\u00a0\u00a0\u201cinteraction models\u201d designed\u00a0to let people collaborate more naturally with AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur interactions with each other are very rich,\u201d she\u00a0told Bloomberg\u00a0last month. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of information in our interactions \u2013 when we\u2019re silent, when we\u2019re thinking, when we\u2019re interrupting one another. Interaction models are able to capture all of these nuances.\u201d<\/p>\n
