In my practice, I typically only recommend a multivitamin for picky or selective eaters who aren’t getting enough variety in their diet. The one exception is kids on plant-based or dairy-free diets, who need a reliable source of B12 and often a vitamin D supplement as well.”

Why Vitamins for Kids Matter to Professionals

Busy professionals know work-life balance is important, including things like making sure they squeeze in a gym session even after a busy day of Zoom calls or poring over analytics. And that work-life balance extends to their family, too, as professionals who are also parents need to focus on their kids’ well-being.

For working parents who are frequently on the go, tied up in meetings all day, or just so focused on their to-do list that dinner plans happen at the last minute—and may not be as well-balanced as they’d like—sometimes a kid’s vitamin can help fill in any nutritional gaps. We don’t recommend a vitamin for all kids, though, as that’s something to be discussed with your child’s healthcare provider.

How We Tested and Selected the Vitamins for Kids

Here’s what we considered when choosing our lineup.

Taste and Texture

We focused on taste and texture because that encourages consistency in taking a supplement—and this is especially true for kids. Our lineup includes a range of textures, including chewable tablets, gummies, and even a powder formulation, to suit a variety of preferences.

Formula

We looked for ingredient lists that included essential vitamins and minerals in appropriate amounts, and we worked with a registered dietitian during testing who reviewed this information. We were looking for effective and safe formulas, with clinically supported dosages. Additionally, because we know some parents prefer to avoid sugar or artificial sweeteners, we included a range of options—including sugar-free vitamins, vitamins sweetened with sugar, and vitamins sweetened with alternatives like monk fruit extract and sugar alcohols.

Third-Party Testing

We looked for products that have been third-party tested, as the FDA doesn’t test supplements for safety or efficacy.

Value

Price doesn’t always tell the full story, so here’s the cost per serving as well. While there’s considerable variation, think about what matters most to you—whether having a sugar-free option, a vitamin with individually packaged servings, or something else—and keep that in mind when examining price. For some people, paying more for certain features is well worth it.

Benefits of Kids’ Vitamins

According to Dr. Gosnell, “The main benefit of a multivitamin is filling nutrient gaps for picky eaters who aren’t getting enough variety from food alone. For omega-3s, I’d rather see kids get them through diet from things like fish, flax seeds, and chia seeds instead of relying on a supplement, since food sources come with added fiber and nutrients you can’t replicate in a pill.”

What to Avoid in Kids’ Vitamins

Dr. Gosnell identified a few key things to watch for when shopping for a multivitamin for kids:

“When purchasing any vitamin or supplement, I highly recommend looking for a product that’s undergone third-party testing, like USP verification,” says Dr. Gosnell.

Additionally, she says, “I’d avoid gummy vitamins with added sugars, which can cause cavities.”

Dr. Gosnell also says to avoid products that come with “big health claims that aren’t backed by science.”

How to Find the Best Vitamins for Your Kids

When looking for a vitamin for kids, here are some things to consider.

Your Kid’s Diet

If your child has any food allergies or other dietary restrictions, or is simply a picky eater, they may be missing out on certain nutrients. Make sure to talk to your child’s healthcare provider about whether a vitamin supplement is necessary.

Flavors

You can generally find a wide array of flavors available today—and even flavorless options that can be mixed with foods and beverages—so consider which flavors your child enjoys and look for those.

Form

As you can see from the products in our lineup, kids’ vitamins come in lots of different forms—everything from gummies to powders. Make sure to choose a form your child is likely to actually take.

Cost

We calculated the cost per serving of each vitamin and found it ranges from 77 cents to $2.39 per serving. That’s a pretty big difference, so consider what your budget allows as well as what’s most important to you in a kid’s vitamin. You may find that it’s worth it to pay more for a certain feature.

Fortune’s Final Thoughts

Our favorite vitamin for kids is Hiya Daily Multivitamin, a chewable tablet low in added sugar as the formula includes monk fruit extract and mannitol (a type of sugar alcohol). It’s made for kids ages 2 to 12 years old, though be sure to speak with your child’s healthcare provider to determine whether a vitamin is necessary.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

“When I see kids who are highly selective eaters or eating a diet heavy in processed foods, I recommend they start a multivitamin to help meet their nutritional needs,” says Dr. Gosnell, adding, “I prefer chewables over gummies since gummies get stuck in teeth and can lead to cavities.”

</details>
<details>

Dr. Gosnell says, “I recommend kids eat a variety of whole foods, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts or natural nut butters with minimal processed foods and added sugars.
