Nolan flexed his singular box-office might with a global debut unlike any other. Few filmmakers alive could pull off a\u00a0starry, big-budget adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic poem. But in a Hollywood where intellectual property rights rule most hits, Nolan turned\u00a0one of the world\u2019s oldest works of literature\u00a0into an unlikely summer blockbuster.<\/p>\n

The Universal production was no small gamble on Nolan, coming off the 2023\u00a0best picture-winning \u201cOppenheimer.\u201d\u00a0With a production budget of $250 million, it\u2019s among the most expensive R-rated movies ever made. Universal is spending some $125 million to market it.<\/p>\n

But no behind-the-camera name turns out audiences more than Nolan\u2019s. So great was the hype on \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d that IMAX put tickets on sale for some 70 mm showtimes a full year in advance. To satisfy the extraordinary demand for Nolan\u2019s preferred format, IMAX 70 mm, some theaters added midnight and 3 a.m. screenings \u2014 and sold them out.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly rewarding to see the palpable excitement in theaters this weekend,\u201d said Jim Orr, head of domestic distribution for Universal. \u201cNolan has crafted an epic adventure. It\u2019s on a scale that audiences have responded to extraordinarily well.\u201d<\/p>\n

IMAX drives ticket sales<\/h4>\n

Billed as Nolan\u2019s first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, the format drove a huge slice of ticket sales. That included $29.6 million domestically on IMAX and $51.8 million globally, leading to the company\u2019s best weekend ever. IMAX is dedicating its screens entirely to \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d for three weeks. Though only 41 IMAX screens can screen \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d in 70 mm, they accounted for $6.3 million in ticket sales.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe IMAX of it all helped turn it from not only a blockbuster, but a global cultural event,\u201d said Rich Gelfond, chief executive of IMAX. \u201cWe have tickets on sale for week five in some theaters and some of them have already sold out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the pandemic, Nolan has been at the forefront of reviving cinemas. His\u00a0\u201cTenet\u201d\u00a0was one of the first big releases to wade back into theaters in 2020. Three years later, \u201cOppenheimer\u201d and Greta Gerwig\u2019s \u201cBarbie\u201d combined to create arguably\u00a0the movies\u2019 signature moment of the decade. \u201cOppenheimer\u201d ultimately grossed $975 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d arrived in theaters during Hollywood\u2019s best summer since 2019. Ticket sales are running 10.4% ahead of last year, according to Rentrak. The industry is expecting the first $10 billion year at the domestic box office since the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Universal sees \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 playing into the fall<\/h4>\n

The only question for \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d will be how front-loaded it is, given that many moviegoers have had this weekend circled for months. The film faced no new-release competition over the weekend, and it won\u2019t next weekend, either.<\/p>\n

Gelfond said that presales for the movie\u2019s second weekend would rank among their 10 best presales, proof that many moviegoers are waiting to see the film in their preferred format. IMAX 70mm screenings, he said, are largely sold out for the next month, except for some front row seats.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristopher Nolan and Tom Cruise may be the two most high-profile ambassadors for the big-screen experience,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak. \u201cNolan is a director who\u2019s a star as much as any movie star in front of the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

The audience for \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d was notably male, accounting for 59% of tickets sold. But Orr said moviegoers were otherwise \u201cridiculously broad,\u201d playing across demographics and geography.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s delivering for a 17-year-old dude and it\u2019s delivering for a female that\u2019s 55 and up,\u201d said Orr. \u201cIt points to what I\u2019m convinced will be a very long, very successful run throughout not only the rest of the summer but into the fall, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next movie to pose any competition, ironically, also stars Tom Holland and Zendaya: Sony\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d on July 31.<\/p>\n

Casting controversy has no apparent effect<\/h4>\n

\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and features Holland as his son, Telemachus; Anne Hathaway as Penelope; Zendaya as Athena; Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous and Charlize Theron as the sea nymph Calypso.<\/p>\n

Nolan\u2019s casting of \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d including Lupita Nyong\u2019o as Helen and Elliot Page as a soldier, was controversial to some conservative commentators. Elon Musk called Nolan a \u201ccoward\u201d over Nyong\u2019o\u2019s casting.<\/p>\n

But that criticism had little to no effect on \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d becoming one of the\u00a0big-screen cultural events\u00a0of the year. Reviews (95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) are among the best of Nolan\u2019s career. Audiences gave it an \u201cA\u201d CinemaScore.<\/p>\n

PG-rated films followed in the wake of \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d The Walt Disney Co.\u2019s\u00a0\u201cMoana\u201d\u00a0landed in a distant second place with $19 million in its third weekend. Following its disappointing $43 million launch, the live-action remake slid 56% on its second weekend. In two weeks it collected $178 million worldwide, a poor result for a film that cost $250 million to make.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoana\u201d was trailed by Universal\u2019s\u00a0\u201cMinions & Monsters\u201d\u00a0and Disney\u2019s\u00a0\u201cToy Story 5,\u201d\u00a0both of which grossed about $15 million.<\/p>\n
