CME Group Inc. will\u00a0launch\u00a0single-stock futures Monday, allowing investors to hedge or speculate on more than 50 of the largest US companies. The contracts, offering leverage without the complexity of options, will be cash-settled on the closing price of the stocks they\u2019re tied to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s largest derivatives exchange is betting the rise of retail trading and today\u2019s market environment of hot IPOs with limited share availability will make the single-stock futures \u2014 a tool that failed to gain traction in the US after its first first launch 24 years ago \u2014 a success this time around.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has the ability to bring in a lot of new traders to our ecosystem,\u201d Tim McCourt, global head of equities, FX and alternative products at CME, said in a phone interview. The exchange is targeting retail traders, having lined up more than 35 retail intermediaries to help get the futures in front of them, and institutional investors like asset managers, for whom it\u2019ll be a new tool to manage risk, he said.<\/p>\n

Unlike options, single-stock futures provide leveraged exposure without requiring the knowledge of concepts like the Greeks \u2014 the variables that determine how changes in stock prices, volatility, time and interest rates impact the derivatives\u2019 pricing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One use case for futures will be to give investors long or short exposure to stocks where there is a shortage of inventory, as seen recently in SpaceX\u2019s initial public offering. Investors who didn\u2019t get allocated stock in a hot listing could potentially add exposure in a capital-efficient manner using futures.<\/p>\n

Their simplicity over options should make them appealing to retail investors who tend to trade instruments they understand, according to Martin Franchi, CEO of NinjaTrader, a futures broker. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere could be someone who\u2019s perhaps too confused by all the Greeks and everything, and says this is just a simpler way,\u201d he said. \u201cWith the retail participation in markets today, a lot of things are just going to be different about single-stock futures this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The launch comes at a sensitive time for the exchange. The Iran war has given a tailwind to Intercontinental Exchange Inc.\u2019s Brent oil complex over CME\u2019s West Texas Intermediate futures franchise. Meanwhile, volume is flourishing on offshore derivatives exchanges like Hyperliquid Strategies Inc., while Kalshi Inc. and Polymarket are dominating the insurgent prediction markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Longer Hours<\/h3>\n

CME\u2019s single-stock futures will be available to trade five days a week, 23 hours a day \u2014 longer that the normal 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for equity markets. The quarterly contracts will come in\u00a0two sizes: The larger ones \u2014 55 of them will be introduced \u2014 will be based on 100 shares of stock, like typical options, while the 22 micro futures will be based on 10 shares. The latter ones will include Mag7 tech companies, along with 15 others such as Micron Technology Inc., Pfizer Inc. and Walmart Inc.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Futures are common on equity indexes and commodities globally, but for single stocks they\u2019ve had a rocky history in the US. The contracts were banned for almost\u00a0two decades, until an accord was signed in 2000 regulating their supervision and rules for their trading were approved in 2002. They finally launched later that year but never attracted enough interest, eventually disappearing in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shortly after that, regulators lowered the minimum amount of money an investor may need to trade single-stock futures in a bid to help revive the market. CME had to receive approvals from both the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission to launch the contracts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we introduced them the first time, they failed miserably,\u201d remarked CME Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Terry Duffy in the company\u2019s quarterly earnings call on July 22. \u201cThe world has evolved since 2000.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thriving Indian Market<\/h3>\n

In markets like India, where futures on individual stocks are thriving, the contracts are used to take leveraged directional positions, hedge equity portfolios or exploit arbitrage opportunities. They are also the backbone of arbitrage funds, which buy the underlying shares and sell the futures to capture the premium between the two.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Europe, financial institutions use single-stock futures to improve balance sheet efficiency, particularly around quarter-end and year-end regulatory reporting. They are also used to manage long positions and hedge short-position and net dividend risk, according to Jeremy Cohen, global head of Stellar Securities, a derivatives broker.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Like any financial instrument, the new contracts come with risks. Mat Cashman, principal for investor education at the Options Clearing Corp., points out that trading outside of normal hours \u2014 including during the volatile minutes after companies report earnings \u2014 can be choppy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then there are the commissions. Unlike in stock or options trading where many retail platforms charge no fees to traders but instead receive payment for order flow from market makers, retail traders in futures markets generally have to pay commissions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the end, what may be the key to making this product successful could simply come down to the firms facilitating the trading, according to Stuart Kaiser, head of US equity-trading strategy at Citigroup Inc.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRetail has gotten into the habit of using call options to source their leverage \u2014 or levered ETFs,\u201d he said. \u201cFor futures to break into that \u2014 it\u2019ll probably have to come from a push from the discount brokers to offer that product and allow them to trade it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
