The Democrat said it\u2019s best to campaign on his own record delivering for constituents, rather than on the performance of Congress, as his party tries to wrest control from the Republicans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s virtually impossible to sell the performance of Congress to the American people because Congress is such an easy punching bag,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd this particular Congress has been ceding too much of its authority to the executive branch.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cI tell people to sell yourself and what you\u2019ve tried to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet Republican Rep. Brandon Gill, a freshman from Texas who has emerged as one of the party\u2019s rising figures, particularly on Trump\u2019s hard-line immigration enforcement agenda, argued there\u2019s plenty to show to voters back home.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve gotten a lot done,\u201d he said<\/p>\n

\u201cCutting taxes across the board, over $100 billion for border security, repealing half the Green New Deal, the biggest mandatory spending reform in history \u2014 pretty historic stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Control of Congress is often an afterthought in presidential election years when the White House is at stake. But in the midterms, when lawmakers face voters as they will this fall, the races largely become a referendum on the party in power.<\/p>\n

Republicans have history against running against them, as the president\u2019s party often encounters losses during the midterm elections \u2014 a\u00a0\u201cthumping,\u201d\u00a0as George W. Bush put it, a\u00a0\u201cshellacking\u201d\u00a0as Barack Obama said \u2014 and a pendulum nation swings.<\/p>\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is about to embark on a cross-country trek to raise millions of dollars for his party and visit lawmakers\u2019 home districts, remains bullish that Republicans will not only keep their House majority control \u2014 but grow their numbers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis week we continued to deliver for the people, and we\u2019re going to continue that straight through the end of this year,\u201d Johnson said after a flurry of legislating before sending lawmakers home for summer.<\/p>\n

Republicans in a single day adopted a budget resolution seeking\u00a0$95 billion for the Iran war\u00a0and other priorities; advanced a $1 trillion Pentagon bill\u00a0renaming it the Department of War; and approved legislation to clamp down on\u00a0stock trading\u00a0in Congress, all over Democratic objections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to run through the tape,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Democratic Leader\u00a0Hakeem Jeffries, who is in line to become House speaker if his party wins control, will launch \u201c100 Days of Action\u201d on Sunday as he works to take the majority and impose a\u00a0check on Trump\u2019s White House.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be easy, right?\u201d Jeffries told reporters. \u201cNo one\u2019s going to give it to us. We have to take it in a way that is consistent with the values of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Control of Congress sets the agenda for the nation<\/h4>\n

With its 435 seats being contested, control of the House often narrows to the tiniest slice of the country.<\/p>\n

Fewer than 20 seats are considered genuine toss-ups, according to analysts. The rest are considered safer seats, drawn with map lines designed to favor one party over the other \u2014 including new maps still being drawn to\u00a0eliminate Black majority districts\u00a0largely in the Deep South after a landmark\u00a0Supreme Court decision gutting the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n

Millions of dollars are being spent that will make the difference between a return of the GOP majority eyeing more budget cuts or a new Democratic agenda that is expected to launch vast\u00a0oversight and investigations\u00a0into the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Even as he openly pines for\u00a0a normal Congress, Johnson believes the country needs a steady hand at the wheel as he partners with the White House on Trump\u2019s priorities \u2014 and fend off Democratic investigations and the threat of impeachment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are increasingly confident that we will hold and grow this majority in the House \u2014 and we must,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Democrats under Jeffries make the case that Trump and the Republicans in charge have done nothing for Americans struggling with high costs of living. Instead, they say Trump waged war against Iran that sent gas prices soaring, slapped tariffs on goods that are spiking prices, deported longtime immigrants and slashed health care and food aid as part of Trump\u2019s big tax cuts bill last summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re flailing all over the place,\u201d Jeffries said.<\/p>\n

Jeffries vowed that Democrats \u201cwill hold the crooks accountable\u201d on a number of issues, including the Trump family\u2019s business dealings.<\/p>\n

A throwback to communism or forward-looking new ideas<\/h4>\n

Johnson raises the specter of a mid-20th-century-style\u00a0communist threat\u00a0if Democrats win control with a new generation of far-left progressive candidates, some backed by the Democratic Socialists of America.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been saying that this is an election that\u2019s shaping up as a contest between common sense and crazy,\u201d he said. Now, he said, it\u2019s \u201ccommon sense versus communism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffries brushes past such warnings as unserious. \u201cHouse Democrats aren\u2019t a cult,\u201d he said, a criticism his party often lobs at Trump\u2019s backers in Congress. \u201cWe\u2019re a coalition of people, public servants, who are committed to getting things done.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the newest lawmakers, Rep. James Gallagher, R-Calif., said he\u2019s just trying to focus on the issues important to constituents back home.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in a time where there\u2019s a lot of division, unfortunately,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think one key is like, Hey, trying to bring people together to solve problems for Americans, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
