They fake page views, clicks, impressions, and user sessions, all of which inflate web analytics data, and when fake internet activity is mistaken for genuine engagement, companies lose billions. According to Juniper Research, global losses from digital advertising fraud are expected to exceed $131bn by 2030, up from $56bn in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whether gen AI is being used for scams, impersonation, and misinformation, or for more harmless purposes, it is undoubtedly making the web feel less trustworthy. It seems\u00a0ridiculous, but\u00a0possibly not\u00a0that ridiculous, to find a better way to tell man from machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the thinking behind Tools for Humanity, the startup co-founded by OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, and German entrepreneur, Alex Blania,\u00a0in\u00a02019. The company uses blockchain-based identity tools to verify\u00a0people\u00a0before\u00a0they can use\u00a0online apps and services.\u00a0Last month, it announced an expansion of its verification platform, World ID.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By far, its\u00a0most\u00a0recognizable product is a mysterious\u00a0white\u00a0sphere, known officially as\u00a0\u2018the Orb\u2019.\u00a0To be granted human status, you must gaze into its aperture\u00a0as it\u00a0captures the\u00a0distinct\u00a0crypts, freckles, and contraction furrows\u00a0of your iris\u00a0and face.\u00a0Within seconds, a unique 12,800-digit \u201ciris code\u201d is generated and\u00a0stored in a conjoining app on your phone to be used as proof that\u00a0you, in fact, are a real person.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many companies already use biometrics and passkeys to distinguish legitimate users from fraudsters. What Tools for Humanity is offering is proof that an online account belongs to one unique human being, without necessarily revealing who that person is. A passkey can prove someone controls a device; it can\u2019t prove that thousands of accounts aren\u2019t being operated by the same person or machine.<\/p>\n<p>When I ask Trevor\u00a0Traina, Tools for Humanity\u2019s chief business officer, why I should trust the Orb with my eyeball data, he became noticeably careful about the language used to describe the process. \u201cThis is not a scan. It takes a photo, which is then destroyed\u2026I\u00a0detest the word\u00a0\u2018scan\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It was a revealing\u00a0caveat, and a sign of the scrutiny and suspicion the company has faced since its\u00a0inception.\u00a0When Altman first\u00a0revealed the World project on X, whistleblower Edward Snowden posted: \u201cDon\u2019t catalogue eyeballs.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The technology was later temporarily restricted in several European countries amid concerns over privacy and biometric data collection. Now,\u00a0however,\u00a0the Orb can be found in high streets and shopping centres across European cities,\u00a0including\u00a0in the UK\u00a0and Germany.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe company initially struggled to explain the technical safeguards,\u201d\u00a0Traina\u00a0admits. \u201cThat allowed misconceptions around eye-scanning to spread.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tools for Humanity insists the system is private. According to Traina, the biometric data is encrypted, sent to the user\u2019s device, and subsequently deleted. Much of the company\u2019s infrastructure has also been made open-source, enabling independent researchers to scrutinize its security systems, he adds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, convincing the public to trust a futuristic silver\u00a0orb with\u00a0something as sensitive as biometric identity\u00a0remains\u00a0a challenge. Traina himself says he was initially skeptical\u00a0of the idea.\u00a0His view changed after a series of lengthy conversations with Altman, who argued that the rise of AI would one day introduce \u201cincredible new complexities around what is real and what is not.\u201d Today, Traina says, those concerns are already beginning to materialise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Raised in San Francisco\u00a0but educated in Oxford, Traina previously sold ventures to companies including Microsoft, Mastercard, and Intuit before later serving as US ambassador to Austria, a role once held decades earlier by his grandfather.\u00a0Despite his Silicon Valley credentials, Trania does not consider himself a \u201ccookie-cutter tech guy\u201d.\u00a0His\u00a0experience across technology and international diplomacy,\u00a0he argues, shaped his belief that identity infrastructure should not belong exclusively to governments or large tech companies. \u201cThis has to become a decentralised protocol that belongs to everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tools for Humanity\u00a0ultimately wants\u00a0to verify every human being on Earth. Whether the public shares that vision\u00a0remains\u00a0uncertain. Airlines and ticketing companies are battling\u00a0bot scalping\u00a0(automated trading programs that try to make a profit), banks face increasingly sophisticated\u00a0scams\u00a0and identity fraud, while retailers are struggling with fake reviews.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s\u00a0more, Zoom, Docusign, and Tinder have all announced support for aspects of World ID verification, while integrations with\u00a0Shopify and Okta are underway.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The idea is gaining traction among senior leaders. Jen Wong, COO of Reddit, suggests that some form of \u201cproof of human\u201d verification may become inevitable as\u00a0the platform\u00a0strives\u00a0to preserve trust online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re entering a period where bots can sound, look, and behave almost indistinguishably from humans online,\u201d Traina says. \u201cEvery\u00a0day\u00a0platforms are at risk of becoming unreliable.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The repeated outages affecting major online services are further evidence that existing security systems are struggling to cope with all the bot-driven activity, he adds.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the near-future,\u00a0Traina argues the threat will become serious enough that companies will soon begin \u201cinoculating their workforce against the bot disease,\u201d by requiring verified digital identities for internal communications, workplace software, and even physical building access.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of Tools for Humanity\u2019s new, more commercially practical products is Concert Kit, a system designed to combat ticket-scalping bots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is our solution to the Taylor Swift problem,\u201d Traina jokes, referring to the chaos all diehard Swifties will remember when tickets for The Eras Tour went on presale and Ticketmaster was hit with 3.5 billion system requests in a single day. Fans were locked out while bots snapped up tickets in seconds, only for them to reappear online minutes later at eye-watering mark-ups,\u00a0in some cases up to 70 times face value. Authorities later alleged that one broker used bots to\u00a0acquire\u00a0hundreds of thousands of tickets, generating tens of millions in profits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musician\u00a0Anderson\u00a0.Paak\u00a0vouched for Concert Kit at a recent Tools for Humanity event. He used the system to reserve 1,000 concert tickets exclusively for \u201cverified humans\u201d,\u00a0reportedly blocking\u00a0more than 100,000 bot attempts. \u201cI fucking hate bots,\u201d he reportedly told the crowd.\u00a0\u201cThey\u00a0make everything really shitty. Especially for the fans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0yet,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0an irony\u00a0at the heart of Tools for Humanity\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0difficult\u00a0to\u00a0ignore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As both CEO of OpenAI and\u00a0chairman\u00a0of Tools for Humanity, Altman is helping build the systems making the internet harder to trust, while simultaneously backing the infrastructure\u00a0claiming to\u00a0restore it.\u202f\u00a0Earlier this month, OpenAI released a new image-generation tool capable of producing visuals that are\u00a0far\u00a0more convincing than early models.\u00a0Its release no doubt expands the commercial opportunity for verification platforms like the Orb.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That the same tech firms who created the disease are now selling the cure is reason enough to invite scrutiny. But\u00a0then\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0the added\u00a0fact that for a\u00a0company whose mission\u00a0seeks\u00a0to restore trust, Tools for Humanity has occasionally struggled to earn it. <\/p>\n<p>Questions around privacy, governance and data collection have prompted scrutiny in several countries, making policymakers wary of endorsing the project outright.
