Coinbase, the\u00a0U.S.\u2019s largest\u00a0crypto exchange, will be based out of Abu Dhabi Global Marketplace (ADGM), from where it has been\u00a0granted a license\u00a0to arrange deals in investments and\u00a0securely hold\u00a0digital assets\u00a0to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0the\u00a0launch of tokenized\u00a0securities. These will\u00a0be backed by real shares and issued under ADGM\u2019s regulatory framework.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>

Investors will also be able to hold the assets in digital wallets,\u00a0eliminating\u00a0the need for a\u00a0brokerage account or a correspondent banking relationship.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cThis is the most significant step we have taken yet toward building the infrastructure for a more open, more accessible global financial system,\u201d the crypto exchange said in a statement announcing the decision last week.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Abu Dhabi is keen to become a major player in that\u00a0shift. In\u00a02018, ADGM issued one of the world\u2019s first regulatory frameworks for virtual assets.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new hub forms part of Coinbase\u2019s wider expansion in the UAE. The company already runs Project Diamond in Abu Dhabi, which focuses on\u00a0digital debt for institutional investors, while its derivatives business is based in Dubai.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More broadly,\u00a0the Gulf has been leveraging its sovereign wealth funds\u00a0to invest in tokenization.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>

Global consulting firm Kearney\u00a0predicts that\u00a0close to $500\u00a0billion\u00a0of GCC assets will be represented on blockchain by 2030,\u00a0led by private markets,\u00a0funds, and bank deposits.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Qatar\u2019s first EV factory will put Gulf heat to the test<\/h3>

Qatar is gearing up to launch its first electric vehicle factory, producing cars specifically engineered to withstand the Gulf\u2019s extreme heat and challenging climate.<\/span><\/p>

Doha-based JTA International Investment Holding and the UK-based\u00a0Watt\u00a0Electric Vehicle Company have\u00a0<\/span>struck a deal to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant<\/span>\u00a0that will design, engineer, and manufacture a new generation of EVs.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

The focus will be on advanced heat management and battery performance,\u00a0<\/span>given temperatures exceeding 40\u00b0C can cut battery range by as much as 22%<\/span>, dissuading potential buyers who\u00a0frequently\u00a0navigate long desert routes.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

The facility aims to start production in early 2028,\u00a0<\/span>with an initial run of about 5,000 vehicles a year<\/span>,\u00a0comprised\u00a0of passenger cars and delivery vans.<\/span><\/p>\n

It will first target the domestic market before expanding exports throughout the GCC and selected international markets. JTA has said\u00a0<\/span>the longer-term ambition is to\u00a0establish\u00a0Qatar as a regional\u00a0center\u00a0for EV manufacturing and clean mobility.<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0<\/span>GCC electric vehicle market is valued at $11.64 billion<\/span>\u00a0and is projected to reach $31.66 billion by\u00a02031,\u00a0according to Mordor Intelligence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEarly-mover policy mandates, sovereign-wealth funding, and a rapid build-out of ultra-fast public chargers are synchronizing to accelerate adoption across every Gulf state,\u201d noted the market intelligence firm.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>UAE is currently the Middle East\u2019s largest market for EV sales<\/span>, accounting for\u00a0nearly 50%\u00a0of total sales, according to the International Energy Agency\u2019s Global\u00a0<\/span>EV Outlook 2026<\/span><\/i>\u00a0report. It marked the second consecutive year that it took the top spot.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

Gulf tourism starts to recover but Dubai lags\u202f<\/h3>

Despite\u00a0the deadlock in U.S.-Iran peace talks, there are early signs of a recovery in Gulf tourism, according to\u00a0<\/span>U.K.-based Capital\u00a0Economics.\u202f<\/span><\/p>

In a note published on Monday<\/span>, the global macroeconomic research firm highlighted how a<\/span>viation data suggests a revival is taking\u00a0hold, particularly in intra-GCC travel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Available seat kilometres\u2014a measure of\u00a0passenger-carrying\u00a0capacity\u2014are rebounding quickly among Middle East carriers, while passenger load factors, which\u00a0indicate\u00a0how full flights are, reached\u00a076.3%\u00a0in June, close to their pre-war average.<\/span><\/p>

However, it noted that the Gulf\u2019s tourism markets have\u00a0different characteristics, meaning their near-term prospects are likely to vary.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia\u2019s tourism sector should prove more resilient, given the large share of visitors traveling for religious purposes to destinations that are geographically farther from the conflict.<\/span><\/p>

Meanwhile, Bahrain relies heavily on regional visitors, particularly from Saudi Arabia, who have proved more resilient than\u00a0travelers\u00a0from further afield.<\/span><\/p>\n

By contrast, the UAE\u2019s heavy reliance on visitors from outside the Gulf means its tourism sector may face a longer road to\u00a0recovery. Hotel\u00a0occupancy rates in Dubai were down over 30% in June compared\u00a0with the\u00a0same month last year.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd these figures are flattered somewhat by the fact that many hotels have closed for renovation due to the lack of demand,\u201d noted Capital Economics.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

S&P\u00a0Global\u2019s\u00a0Dubai Economy Tracker shows that the tourism sector indicator has barely moved since its March decline.\u202f<\/span><\/p>

The contribution of tourism to the economies of the GCC states varies significantly. Bahrain and the UAE are the most reliant on the sector, which\u00a0directly\u00a0contributes\u00a0a respective 7.1% and 6.2%\u00a0to GDP, while it accounts for just 0.6% of Kuwait\u2019s GDP<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe drag from tourism will become larger if the recovery doesn\u2019t gain more momentum by the peak season in Q4,\u201d said the research firm.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

Gulf energy exports stage modest recovery amid Hormuz chokehold<\/h3>

Saudi Arabia\u00a0increased\u00a0crude output<\/span>\u00a0to 8.2\u00a0million barrels per day in July, up from 7.1 million the month before,\u00a0according to a report seen by Bloomberg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the seven OPEC members that\u00a0submitted\u00a0their production figures directly to the group\u2019s secretariat, output rose by 1.88 million barrels a day, driven\u00a0largely by\u00a0increases in Iraq and Saudi Arabia amid a temporary cessation of hostilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

However, Saudi\u2019s output still sits several million barrels a day below pre-conflict levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile,<\/span><\/b>LNG loadings from Qatar\u2019s Ras Laffan export complex climbed to their highest level since March, with the\u00a0<\/span>10-day moving average reaching roughly 80,000 tons last week<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But this is still a stark 60% drop compared to the same period last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Qatar has\u00a0largely halted\u00a0LNG shipments through Hormuz since fighting in the region resumed last month. Two tankers carrying Qatari LNG were hit in July.<\/span><\/p>

Between March and June,\u00a0<\/span>LNG loadings from Qatar and the UAE declined by 35 billion cubic meters<\/span>\u00a0year-on-year, according to the\u00a0<\/span>International Energy Agency<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, this steep decline was partly offset by higher LNG output from new projects in the U.S. and Africa,\u00a0<\/span>plus better\u00a0feedgas\u00a0availability from legacy producers,\u00a0<\/span>which grew by almost 18%\u00a0year-on-year during this period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Among the options: sabotaging internet cables in the Persian Gulf, creating political unrest in countries with Shia communities such as Kuwait and Bahrain, and potentially even launching ground operations in Kuwait<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The UAE\u2019s Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>leading a project to help AI better understand Arab culture and the region\u2019s many dialects<\/span><\/span>. Researchers have built\u00a0<\/span>ArabCulture<\/span>-Dialogue, the first benchmark for testing whether leading AI models can understand and converse in Modern Standard Arabic and 13 national dialects. The study found that, while models are often capable of grasping what Arabs say, they struggle when asked to speak in specific dialects, particularly Emirati and North African Arabic.
