{"id":559,"date":"2026-06-02T18:44:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T18:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=559"},"modified":"2026-06-02T18:44:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T18:44:16","slug":"chipotle-coo-calls-hiring-one-of-the-most-painful-processes-so-his-ai-bot-ava-cado-cut-it-from-12-days-to-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=559","title":{"rendered":"Chipotle COO calls hiring one of the \u2018most painful processes\u2019\u2014so his AI bot \u2018Ava Cado\u2019 cut it from 12 days to 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re constantly trying to remove friction from our general manager or anything in the restaurant,\u201d Chipotle Chief Operating Officer Jason Kidd said at <em>Fortune\u2019s<\/em> COO Summit on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=557\">Canada is asking to renew the U.S. and Mexico free-trade agreement for another 16 years<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But one challenge has stubbornly persisted: \u201cOne of the most painful processes we have still\u2014and it\u2019s getting much better\u2014is the hiring process,\u201d Kidd said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company\u2019s turnover rate had ballooned to almost 200% in 2021, and one answer, Chipotle decided in 2024, was an AI chatbot named \u201cAva Cado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The innovation was designed to take the administrative weight of hiring off restaurant managers\u2019 plates. The tool chats with job candidates, answers their questions about Chipotle, collects basic information, schedules interviews, and sends offer letters to candidates selected by hiring managers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results have been measurable. The time from application to first day on the job has dropped from 12 days to four. And because \u201cAva Cado\u201d operates around the clock, about 30% of that scheduling work now happens after hours\u2014time that would have previously required a general manager to be on the clock.<\/p>\n<p>But Kidd framed the technology as augmentation, not replacement. Rather than cutting labor, Kidd said, Chipotle has redirected time savings back into restaurant operations.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cEverything we\u2019ve added from an AI standpoint\u2014we\u2019ve reinvested those hours into the restaurant,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018How far can we push it?\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Still, Kidd said he sees limits to how far automation can go.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, that applicant ends up working for a human,\u201d he added. \u201cSo how far can we push it?\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kidd wasn\u2019t alone in arguing that, despite mounting pressure to automate, humans still need to remain at the center of the workplace.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alongside Kidd at the <em>Fortune<\/em> panel titled \u201cBeyond the Pilot: How COOs Are Scaling AI Today,\u201d executives pushed back on some of the louder fears surrounding AI-driven job losses, arguing that the technology is more likely to reshape jobs than erase them altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur people are what we offer to our clients, their expertise, their experiences,\u201d said Sushant Warikoo, chief business officer AI at IT firm Cognizant.\u00a0 \u201cFor us, there\u2019s no choice, because if we do not transform our people for the AI age, we do not have a business run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscountrymovingteams.com\/?p=555\">Trump killed his own AI order, then quietly signed another one weeks later<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Warikoo argued the bigger question for business leaders is not simply what AI can replace, but what kind of workforce society wants to build alongside it\u2014especially as technology gets close to AGI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we want the self-driving car, or do we want somebody to drive the car?\u201d he said. \u201cOne, it\u2019s a living for somebody, and some people are still more comfortable with a human behind the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Those questions, he said, are ultimately social, economic, and public policy decisions. But history suggests technological upheaval does not necessarily eliminate opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis happened during the industrial revolution, during the digital revolution,\u201d Warikoo said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody thought there was going to be chaos. But what really happened was jobs changed, opportunities amplified, value amplified. Some things never change\u2014which is human potential and human value creation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, reimagining business processes for an AI-first future is far from easy.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really hard,\u201d Bose senior vice president and COO Skip Potter said, noting that building workflows designed for an AI-enabled future\u2014not simply layering AI onto old systems\u2014requires organizations to rethink how work gets done from the ground up.<\/p>\n<p>Rashmi Kumar, senior vice president and global chief information officer at Medtronic, echoed that point, arguing that today\u2019s most successful AI applications remain narrow and task-specific.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at where the LLMs have been more successful, it\u2019s still in deterministic use cases, like software code generation,\u201d Kumar said. \u201cBut code generation doesn\u2019t mean anything by itself.
