She said her husband, a handyman in Key West, Florida, has a permit to work in the United States. He loves his children with all his soul,\u201d said Argelia, 47.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Aviles\u2019 arrest comes as the Trump administration rolls back\u00a0immigration protections for military families\u00a0to pursue its\u00a0mass deportation agenda, detaining at least dozens of parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. troops.<\/p>\n<p>At least six family members\u00a0have been deported\u00a0and one self-deported, the AP found in\u00a0the first accounting of such detentions, which the government does not track. One spouse, the\u00a0wife of a U.S. soldier\u00a0who spent more than a month in federal immigration detention, was removed from a deportation flight to Brazil after the AP\u2019s reporting.<\/p>\n<p>One of the military\u2019s most highly advertised immigration benefits is \u201cmilitary parole-in-place,\u201d which allows the spouses, children and parents of active-duty service members and veterans to obtain legal immigration status from within the country. Not everyone qualifies: those who overstayed visas or who already applied for legal status at the border, for example.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that Border Patrol agents arrested Luis Aviles on Saturday in Key West and that he will remain in ICE custody while the government seeks to deport him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation\u2019s laws,\u201d the department said Sunday, adding that the Trump administration \u201cdoes not pick and choose which laws to enforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Aviles\u2019 son said he has been working 12-hour work shifts for more than 250 days without a break on the USS Lincoln, which is deployed in the Middle East. The deployment has raised widespread concerns about the impact on service members who are away from land for long periods, food shortages, as well as the increasing strain on the ship and its equipment.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Pentagon referred all questions to the Navy. I don\u2019t know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly treated like a criminal,\u201d Joshua Aviles wrote.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Katherine Delgado, 28, Joshua Aviles\u2019 sister, said that Joshua joined the military in part because he thought it would improve his father\u2019s chances of getting citizenship and so that he would \u201cno longer be living in fear of being arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>She said being apart from Joshua, who she calls her \u201cbest friend\u201d and her \u201cride-or-die,\u201d has been devastating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent weeks without knowing where he was,\u201d Delgado said. Once she heard from him, and was told that he wasn\u2019t getting enough food, she said, she has spent hundreds of dollars to send him care packages with food and hygiene products \u2014 some of which never arrived.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Joshua is \u201csupposed to come home soon,\u201d Delgado said, referring to news that the ship her brother is on\u00a0will soon be brought out of service\u00a0in the Middle East. \u201cAnd he\u2019s gonna come home without his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The son\u2019s lengthy deployment has been challenging for Luis Aviles, according to his wife. He told her that he was looking forward to the deployment finally coming to an end.
